WHAT IS A
TEXTBOOK?
•
A textbook or coursebook i s a manual of
instruction in any branch of study.
•
A textbook is a manual of instruction or a
standard book using in education.
•
Textbook is a teaching tool (material) which
presents the subject matter defined by the curriculum.
•
A textbook is meant to provide the core
materials for a course. It aims to provide as much as possible in one book and
is designed so that it could serve as the only book learners use during a
course
Importance/Advantages
of Textbook
•
Text book makes the teaching of English
systematic.
•
It checks the teacher from going astray.
•
It facilitates self learning and self study.
•
It represents the selected portion of language
materials which can be taught in a given time.
• It avoids the haphazardness, unnecessary repetition and omission in teaching learning process.
•
It is memory aid for a teacher and student.
•
It makes the track on which the process of
learning rolls.
•
It provides the language experience.
•
It serves as a guide to the teacher. The
teacher does not have to make important decisions on what to teach, in which
order and how to teach.
• It is an effective resource for self-directed learning; an effective resource for presentation material; a source of ideas and activities
• It act as reference books and guides for students. On the basis of their textbook, students know what has been covered (and thus what they should have learnt) and what needs to be covered.

OF ANALYSING A TEXT-BOOK
(1) Paper Quality, printing of text-book
The paper and printing of a good text-book
should be of good quality and attractive.
The paper should be white, thick and smooth.
The threading and binding should also be attractive
and durable.
The font size for junior, middle and senior class should be 24, 18 and 16 respectively.

(2) Cover, Size and Binding
(a) The cover of the book should be think.
Strong and durable. It should have an attractive illustration preferable
colored. A jacket adds to the attraction of the book.
(b) For the lower class the size of the kook
should be quarto, for higher classes crown size is quite suitable.
(c) The binding of the book should be durable
and permit the book to open freely, thread- stitching good & gum and the
pasting down of end-papers against the cover are all features of a good
binding.

(3) Price of text-book:-
The price of the book should be within the
reach of all the students. Most of the students are unable to purchase the text
book on higher price.

(4) Number of pages
It is not possible to delimit the number of
pages of the book but lower classes books should be smaller compared to higher
class. Lesser number of pages should be preferred so that the number of pages of the book do not exceed 200 pages.
Lower class less than 100 pages.

(1) Adequate subject matter and content:-

1. A text book should include all language
items.

2. Subject matter should be based on the
psychological principles,

3. Subject matter should be suited to the age
of the pupils.

4. Subject matter should be linked with Indian
culture, tradition, surrounding and social life.

5. Subject matter should have varied topics as
stories, dialogues, discussion, biography, conversation, play, poetry, places
of interest or national importance narration and description.

(1) Adequate subject matter and content:-
6. Subject matter should be based upon aims and
objectives of teaching.
7. Subject matter should be taught through
different methods approaches techniques and devices.
8. Subject matter should be taught by using
audio-visual aid.
9. In subject matter both the aspects ( oral
and written) should be stressed.
10 .IT should be based on the need and
interests of the students.

(1) Adequate subject matter and content:-
For younger children home, family, fairs,
festivals, games, animals and interesting stories. For middle and higher
classes charming tales of action, heroism, natural phenomena, events, drama and
fictions.
The lessons should not be too long. It should
be informative and well as useful to students for use of English.
Proportion of prose and poem should be 4:1.

(2) Language and style:-
The vocabulary of a reader must be selected and
restricted because only then children will be able to read and understand it
easily and rapidly. the development of vocabulary should be progressive within
the series of readers. The number of new words introduced should be from 200 to
500 per book. This number should rise with the age of the students.
The style of book must gradually grow from
simple to compiler. The essential qualities of good style in an English book
are these simple and short sentences, clear expression, logical sequence,
liveliness and appeal to the senses.

patterns or structures or functional grammar should also be selected and graded
for difficult grades..

(4) Developing all language skills
:- A good English text book develops listening
with the four language skill i.e. understanding, speaking, reading and writing.
A good English Text-book should provide ample opportunities of oral and written
work.

(5) Picture, Table and illustration
A good English book should contain illustration
and pictures, illustration and pictures should be relevant and correct to the
nature of the topic of the lesson, they must be attractive and clear and should
be presented in colors. For young children it should be colored.

(6) Reliability and validity of the book
The textbook should be reliable and have validity. The information should be
authentic and factually correct without any bias.
The expert opinions should be taken.
The validity of the book means the content must
reflect English learning.

(7) Free and Controlled composition
Controlled composition should be introduced in
text books at upper primary stage and free composition should be included at
later stage.

(8) Cultural
content
A good text book should also contain cultural
and serial contents about different regions of India, suitable pictures should
be given to depicts such cultural contents.

An ideal text book of English should be
supplemented by teacher’s hand book. Handbook gives the guidance to make his
teaching more effective and useful.

(10) Practice exercises, assignment and
glossary
Sufficient Practice exercises should be given
at the end of the lesson.
The exercises should be related to the lesson and should be interesting having variety in type of questions.

• TECHNIQUES OF
ANALYSING A TEXTBOOK:
✓ Find
out the name of the book, author or poet, editor, publisher, place, year,
edition, number of pages and price of the book.
✓ Write short summary of the book if it is
distributed in many chapters.
✓ Write some important matter e.g. figures, tables,
pictures, slogans, important words and proverbs. Write about the content of the
book, style, typing, building and usefulness of the book.
✓ Write the review in your words.
